Easy Yogurt Popsicles – Great Snack for Teething Babies

Am I the only one who lusts after the fancy popsicle sets sold at Williams Sonoma?  Sounds great, but perhaps I’ll have to wait for another June Cleaver life.  Sure, it would be great to make triple flavored striped fruit pops for my little munchkin, but let’s keep things a bit easier, shall we?  As great as the idea is, spending the time to do it when you are already stretched a little thin just isn’t so realistic.  With any free time, I’d rather take a nap.

Here’s a super easy recipe.  (Can I really call it a recipe??)  Anyway, here’s an idea that has been great for our house.  Bella adores yogurt, so we serve it to her nearly every day.  She also started teething a couple of months ago and I know that the cold yogurt straight from the fridge feels good on her tender gums.  But if you freeze it, it is even better for teething.  The fantastic part is that it takes nearly two seconds to make this “recipe”.  So easy, you can do this while putting away your groceries once you come home from the store. » Read more: Easy Yogurt Popsicles – Great Snack for Teething Babies

How to Get Started Cooking Homemade Baby Food

August 22nd, 2009

baby_foodThere is a huge industry devoted to shelf-stable, prepared foods for babies. One quarter of an aisle, at my grocery store, is devoted to jarred and boxed baby food. I understand why it is convenient for traveling, daycare or for families who work long, unusual hours, but I don’t understand why it is the default solution for so many people. Making baby food is easy, convenient and inexpensive.

Cooking for Bella has been a lot of fun. I’ve always loved cooking for my family and friends, so I was surprised that while pregnant, many people gave me a doubting look and asked, “So, you think you’re going to make your own baby food?” It never occurred to me that I wouldn’t, but so many people asked that I started to wonder if it was going to be too much work.  I know that some families don’t cook that much at home, so perhaps cooking only for the baby is a little more than what they are used to, but I’m already cooking for two adults, how much more work is it to cook for my little munchkin? » Read more: How to Get Started Cooking Homemade Baby Food

Do You Know Your Daycare’s Policies?

August 22nd, 2009

Today’s daycare has made many strides and progress not only to provide care, but also introduce learning programs to advance your child’s education.  Please realize I speak in a very general tone based off of my experience.  Some may not have as many policies as the center my son attends.  My son’s center is an environmentally friendly center that has made great attempts to provide an allergy-free, €œgreen€ learning environment.  Children are separated by age groups.  Each group has their day structured around learning applications that are age appropriate.  As a new parent without friends that had children in daycare, I’ve had to learn about the policies and procedures on my own. » Read more: Do You Know Your Daycare’s Policies?

Atlanta: Piedmont Park and the Greenway

August 21st, 2009

Atlanta has some really great parks to explore.  There is a wide range of options: some in the city and others out in the burbs, some are great with strollers and others are best with backpacks, some along the river and others up the mountain!

Piedmont Park is a popular choice.  In the center of the city, there are long paved trails, a large lake, a big playground, many park benches and picnic tables.  On Saturdays, they host a farmer’s market.  They have a track course surrounding two softball fields, two soccer fields and two volleyball courts.  There are also tennis courts and a public pool.  Many restaurants are on the edge of the park, including a personal favorite, The Flying Biscuit.  Piedmont Park is next to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, another local treasure, so you could easily visit them at the same time.  This past week, the park celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a benefit concert with Paul McCartney.  Pretty cool!  I wish I could have been there.  Even though Piedmont Park has something for everyone, it is very large and there is enough space for everyone.

If you are north of the city or you are looking for something off the beaten path, less manicured and more natural, an excellent option is the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta on North Point Parkway, next to an Ethan Allen furniture store.  If you live near there, you have certainly passed by the entrance a number of times, and you might not have even known it.  One of the fun things about this treasure is that it appears to be a quiet little gem that appears out of nowhere.  It is really close to North Point Mall, but it has a tiny little driveway and can be rather difficult to find this small sign.

While the Greenway is left to its own devices regarding landscaping, you still have the luxury of over six miles of very wide, smooth paths for strollers.  I think the paths are the widest that I have seen of any park that I have visited.  This may not sound like much to many people, but when you are out walking with other Moms and can fit 3 or 4 strollers across the path at once – That makes for some great conversations and good times…

The trees are very tall and provide great shade, which is a huge advantage of this park over others, as Atlanta days can be so hot and the sun so bright for little baby skin, especially those under 6 months who aren’t supposed to wear sunscreen.  Also, if you get hungry, you can bring a picnic and sit at a picnic table or leave the wilderness and be back in civilization in minutes.  There are many great spots for lunch nearby.

Airline Baby Travel Tip: Liquid Alternatives

August 19th, 2009

bedtime washclothsIt is more difficult to travel with a baby.  There is no doubt about that.  Sometimes, it is enough to make you reconsider the plans.  However, like everything else, all it takes is a little planning and a few new tricks and those skies will start to look pretty friendly.  I just got back a few nights ago from my sister’s house at the beach.  While Bella and I have traveled a lot this year, this was my first flight alone with her with a layover.  I was a bit nervous about this complexity, but I wasn’t going to turn down a week at the beach with my family.  Just like most things, the anticipation was worse than the actual travel. » Read more: Airline Baby Travel Tip: Liquid Alternatives
