Coupons: Save some Cash on Groceries in Atlanta

September 11th, 2009

According to The Coupon Clippers and I Heart Publix, this weekend is a great weekend to buy multiple copies of the newspaper.  There are going to be 5 coupon inserts. Normally there are just two. So, I will be buying many for myself- at least 6, maybe 8. I’m really excited about some of the coupons- Nestle’s chocolate chips, lots of Publix coupons which can be matched with manufacturer’s coupons and some Green Giant coupons for 50 cents.  At Publix, some Green Giant frozen veggies are $1 right now so I’ll be able to get frozen veggies for free, if they match up.  Remember, those $0.50 coupons double at Publix, so they are worth $1!  Obviously, I will buy one paper first and check that there are tons of coupons in it that I like before I buy 8, so I suggest you do the same. :)  If you want to have an idea of what is likely to be in the paper, you can check out the calendar at The Coupon Clippers.  Remember, there are usually some variation from region to region.

Ok, regarding buying the paper… You want to buy the paper as inexpensively as possible, because each dollar you pay for your coupons is a dollar that cuts into the money you are supposed to be saving. So, if you live in Atlanta and read the AJC, print out a bunch of these coupons.  These are Kroger coupons, but remember they are also accepted at most Publix grocery stores.  If the cashier doesn’t recognize them, tell him that it is a Kroger coupon for the AJC and is treated as a competitor coupon.  Of course, if you have friends, family or neighbors who get the paper but don’t clip coupons, ask them if you could have their coupon sections. I have a neighbor who is quite happy to give me her coupons. I love it! :)  Most people just throw them away.

Atlanta: Children’s Adventure Garden at Brook Run Park

September 8th, 2009

Brook Run Park in Dunwoody is one of the easy to miss gems in Atlanta that is worth a drive, no matter where you live in the metro area.  Families with children of all ages were taken into consideration when this huge multi-million dollar park was designed. This 102 acre park has something for nearly everyone.

Within Brook Run Park, there is a 5 acre playground area called Children’s Adventure Garden.  The playground areas are generously spaced to allow plenty of room to toddle, walk or run on a wonderful rubbery surface.  This playground is appropriate from 9 months through elementary school with three areas separated for ages 1 -3, 4-7 and 8 and up.  There are many pavilions with picnic tables to provide a place for lunch or snacks.  All of the play areas are connected by wide concrete sidewalks- great for strollers, wheelchairs or tricycles.  There is great parking too.

Of course, Brook Run has lots more to offer including large fields for pick up games of tag, flying kites or for picnics, a 1600 square foot tree house, a huge skateboard park (27,000 square feet!), a large public dog run park and many trails.

One concern is that while there are large mature trees surrounding the park, there aren’t any within the play areas.  The sun can be intense.  While there are areas to retreat to to find shade after you play, ie the pavilions or the tree house, none of the larger play equipment is in the shade.  It can be quite hot and bright in the summer.  Bring sunscreen and hats.  On hot days, consider dressing your children in long pants as the slides can get very hot too.

Time-saver tip: Keeping Track of Baby Bibs

September 6th, 2009

Bibb timesaver tipI can’t tell you how many outfits I could have saved from meal-time disasters if I had a bib nearby.  Here’s the scenario: my son wakes, I bring him downstairs and place him in the high chair, and he immediately demands food.  Usually the last thing I can find is a bib, so I begin to feed him hoping half of his food doesn’t land on his shirt.  Of course it always does.  I came up with this idea so I always have a clean bib nearby.  Luckily his chair has a hole that I’m able to hang his bibs.  I hope this makes your life a little easier.  I know it’s made mine.

Obsessed with Play Food

I am a little obsessed with Play Food.  No, not the plastic kind that comes with the ToysRUs plastic kitchen.  I am really obsessed with the homemade, felted or sewn play foods.  But to be honest, I am a little afraid of my obsession. I am afraid that I will spend hours (or days or weeks) in my own little fantasy world sewing away, but upon receipt, Bella will pelt them at my head.  Or tear them apart with one deft move.  I think the worst thing she could do would be to completely ignore them.  Hmm.  Of course, if she ignores them, then they could be mine, all mine.  I could put them at the center of the dining room table.  I could put make fancy little felt cakes and put them on a cake stand.  I could fix plates of pancakes but leave them on the table – all day!  I don’t know how to explain what I think of these little felt foods or why I think that Bella needs a restaurant supply of felt food. » Read more: Obsessed with Play Food

Free Kashi Cereal? I love it!

September 4th, 2009

Kashi Heart to Heart cerealSo, I found out about this great link for Kashi cereal. Honestly, I have only bought a few types of Kashi products in the past, but everything that I have bought, I have loved. We do eat a lot of Heart-to-Heart cereal. I love the cups because they fit so very nicely in the cup holder in my car, so I can nibble while I drive or toss a few back to Bella. For an on-the-go snack, we eat a fair amount of Cheerios and Heart to Heart. Kashi’s “O” cereal is definitely more delicious than Cheerios. They have honey, so they are sweet and have a better flavor. They also have a better crunch and are bigger. Obviously, the closer parallel product is Honey Nut Cheerios, but for some reason, I just don’t buy that. The other thing I adore about the Kashi cereal are the heart shaped cereal bits. Yes, I am a total sucker for hearts. So adorable.

So, I was thrilled when I ran across this promotion that Kashi is doing now. They are giving away free samples of their product. Yay! I went to the site and filled out my info. They have three different Kashi cereals to choose from, so I picked Heart to Heart Blueberry Flakes.  But guess what? There was an option to fill out a survey in exchange for a coupon for another free product. :) I took the quick survey and am now eagerly awaiting a sweet prize in my mailbox.  Can’t wait!

**Anyway, most moms know that you can’t serve honey to a baby, but remember, that is the case for raw honey. Honey that has been baked into a processed product is considered by most people to be fine, but please consult your pediatrician for your child’s nutritional needs.  Don’t serve raw honey to a baby.
