Maclaren Stroller Recall

November 10th, 2009

In  shocking announcement yesterday, Maclaren, a British luxury stroller brand, announced that it was recalling 1 million strollers – Every stroller that it has ever sold in the United States. 10 years worth of strollers.  I had heard rumors that a stroller recall was coming, but 1 million strollers?  All day yesterday, I tried off and on to go to Maclaren’s website, but their site was overloaded with traffic and I couldn’t get the page to load.  After a bit of research, it appears that when opening and closing the umbrella stroller there is a point at the middle of the stroller where little fingers can get pinched.  12 children have had their fingers amputated in the past 10 years.  This is horrifying news.  It wasn’t until I saw this video on abc.com explaining how it could happen that I understood.  When opening and closing the stroller, if a child were to have their hand on one of the bars of the stroller, at the same time it was opened or closed, it would be very easy to have a finger pinched, or worse, if their hands were in the wrong spot and subjected to the force of the collapsing stroller.  If you have a Maclaren stroller, please get your kit quickly and do not use your stroller until you have installed it.

While I am very glad that Maclaren is voluntarily offering free kits to all stroller owners, I am curious to know how long they have known about this problem.  I am surprised at how many recalls there are on products for children.  It seems like there is something very dangerous revealed all the time.  Two months ago, there was a second warning on close-sleeper convertable cribs by Simplicity. Those injuries were even more shocking as babies could potentially get caught in the crib rails and suffocate.  Two babies have already died in this crib. What is especially horrifying, is that the parent company is refusing to cooperate with the government.  They are not recalling the cribs.

It certainly is interesting to see how these two companies are handling the issue of safety very differently.  I do hope that this voluntary recall will strengthen people’s support of Maclaren and belief that this company is working hard to create safe products.  Simplicity is now out of business.  Their assets were purchased by SFCA, but reportedly, they are not responding to concerns by their customers, the government or the public.

10 Free Ovulation and Pregnancy Test Kits

October 28th, 2009

When I got married 8 years ago, we often heard the same question repeated, “When are you going to have kids?”  It got old after a while, but we kept people guessing for many years.  Now that we have Bella, people ask, “When are you having another?”  Usually I smile and sigh, but what I really want to say is, “Are you outta your !@#$%^&*^% MIND????

For those of you who are a little less freaked out about the prospect of another crying, diaper-exploding, screaming bundle of joy, you are going to love this freebie.

I have found a fun blog called Couponing To Disney.  I used to love to send away for free things when I was a little girl.  Now that I mostly get bills and junk in my mailbox, I have really had fun signing up for freebies.  It’s funny how a free chocolate cherry granola bar can really make my day.  (Here’s another one!) Every few days, Kristin adds links to her site for 4 free things that you can send away for.  I have signed up for samples of diapers, cleaning supplies and food.  But when I saw this link for the ovulation and pregnancy kits, I know that I have many friends who are trying to get pregnant.  I thought that somebody could really use these!

Of course, if you aren’t looking to get pregnant, there are freebies for you too!  LOL!

More free cookies?

October 3rd, 2009

I had to laugh at myself the other day.  Last week, I posted the coupon for the yummy and FREE Mrs Fields’ cookies in honor of National Cookie Month.  I was so excited.  I had this great vision of going to the mall to pick one up with Bella.  I even thought about possibly sharing the cookie with her.  Anyway, I was shocked when I looked up my store and realized that it was really far away.  Funny thing is that I grew up where there were tons of Mrs Fields cookie stores.  The store at my mall is actually called Great American Cookies.  In my head, I must still think of Mrs Fields.  So, I was a little sad that I wouldn’t get a free cookie last Thursday.

Imagine how excited I was when I found out that Great American Cookie is also offering free cookies.  Sign up with them.  Their deal is even better because it lasts longer.  They will email you a coupon.  Mine is good until Oct 8th!   Yay.

As a stay at home mama, somedays I need to do something different to get us out of our weekly routine.  I can’t stand doing the same thing every week.  It just gets under my skin.  So I just love coming up with silly little adventures for us to do during the week.  Who knew that October was National Cookie Month?

On Oct 1, at participating Mrs Fields cookie stores, they will give out a free Chocolate Chip Cookie between 11 am and 1 pm.  Go Here for more info and call your store to see if they are participating.  Also, when you go, ask for a frequent buyer card.  They suggest that you might be able to get 6 more free cookies throughout October.  We’ll see what they mean by that.

Well, it looks like this Thursday, Bella and I will go off in search of a free cookie.  :) I promise that I’ll take a few laps around the mall.  Does this count as exercise?

Who wants to join us?

Thanks, Amanda, at A Few Short Cuts!

Coupons: Save some Cash on Groceries in Atlanta

September 11th, 2009

According to The Coupon Clippers and I Heart Publix, this weekend is a great weekend to buy multiple copies of the newspaper.  There are going to be 5 coupon inserts. Normally there are just two. So, I will be buying many for myself- at least 6, maybe 8. I’m really excited about some of the coupons- Nestle’s chocolate chips, lots of Publix coupons which can be matched with manufacturer’s coupons and some Green Giant coupons for 50 cents.  At Publix, some Green Giant frozen veggies are $1 right now so I’ll be able to get frozen veggies for free, if they match up.  Remember, those $0.50 coupons double at Publix, so they are worth $1!  Obviously, I will buy one paper first and check that there are tons of coupons in it that I like before I buy 8, so I suggest you do the same. :)  If you want to have an idea of what is likely to be in the paper, you can check out the calendar at The Coupon Clippers.  Remember, there are usually some variation from region to region.

Ok, regarding buying the paper… You want to buy the paper as inexpensively as possible, because each dollar you pay for your coupons is a dollar that cuts into the money you are supposed to be saving. So, if you live in Atlanta and read the AJC, print out a bunch of these coupons.  These are Kroger coupons, but remember they are also accepted at most Publix grocery stores.  If the cashier doesn’t recognize them, tell him that it is a Kroger coupon for the AJC and is treated as a competitor coupon.  Of course, if you have friends, family or neighbors who get the paper but don’t clip coupons, ask them if you could have their coupon sections. I have a neighbor who is quite happy to give me her coupons. I love it! :)  Most people just throw them away.
