“Hello, Happy Baby!”

October 27th, 2009

A month ago, Bella and I were leaving a store and walking back to the car as I held her in my arms.  It was the middle of the day, but we were in a parking garage.  It was well lit, as parking garages go, but still a dim, dark concrete, unwelcoming structure.  As we walked down the aisle of cars, I noticed a large, muscled, broad-shouldered man walking directly toward us.  Instinctively, I looked away, stiffened my grip on my baby girl, straightened my posture and quickened my pace.  As we approached each other, I heard Bella laugh in my ear.  I looked over and this big man, twice my size, was making googly eyes and waving to my little baby.

"Hello, Happy Baby!"

"Hello, Happy Baby!"

I am often amazed at how powerfully disarming a smiling, little baby can be.  Bella laughs, waves and flirts with nearly every person she meets.  Two weeks ago, we were among the first to board a plane to DC.  I was exhausted after having trudged through security, pushed her stroller across the concourse and entertained and fed her while we waited at the gate.  Once we were seated, I was tired and stared out of the window at the baggage handlers pulling up to the side of the plane.  Bella stood in my lap and held onto the chair back in front of us.  Her laughter pulled me back from my daydreams and I looked up.  I saw a full aisle of people streaming onto the plane.  They were all exhausted travelers lugging suitcases, overcoats and laptop bags.  It now costs $20 to check your first bag on Delta and $30 for your second, so we are all our own pack mules. For the moment, however, there was something very different about this crowd. » Read more: “Hello, Happy Baby!”

10 tips for Designing a Healthy Nursery

September 30th, 2009

As a new mom, it is easy to get excited about decorating the perfect nursery for your baby’s room.  For just a moment, put the murals, the stuffed animals and the hanging mobiles aside.  One thing to consider is how best to design a healthy and safe haven for your bambino.  When my hubby and I were DINKS, it seemed that some days we came home just to sleep, only to be back out the door early the next morning.  Now that I am a stay at home mama, I spend more time at home than I have before.  Obviously, we go out –but we certainly are home a lot!  Indoor air quality is important and often overlooked.  It is easy to believe that if everything looks clean, it must be safe.

  1. When painting, use low VOC paints.
  2. Hardwood floors are best.  Hard surface floors  are easily cleaned and help prevent allergies.
  3. Throw rugs are more easily cleaned than wall-to-wall carpet that traps allergens.
  4. Use air purifiers or air filtering plants.
  5. Purchase furniture, carpets and paint your nursery early.  Allow the VOCs to off-gas long before the baby arrives home.
  6. Once the baby is home, air out new purchases in another part of the house or let them them air out outside.
  7. Open up the windows and allow fresh air to circulate.
  8. Clean with healthy non-toxic cleaners, or simple soap and hot water.
  9. Wash baby’s linens and clothes before the baby arrives.
  10. Wash baby’s linens often to prevent dust mites.

Prince Lionheart bebePod PLUS | Product Review

August 28th, 2009

We have been so happy with our Prince Lionheart bebePod PLUS.We started using the chair when Bella was about 4 months old. It was a great way to prop her up and let her see what was going on. She loved the view and she felt very secure. In the beginning, we used the little rubber cap that locks into place. This was great for her to hold on to as she kept her balance. As she grew older, we started using the tray. The chair comes with a Sassy toy that snaps into place and also two beautiful place mats. The toy is great to spin around, for teething and general amusement. It does not have any annoying electronic bells and whistles, so it isn’t a toy that will annoy adults. It comes in beautiful vibrant colors. We have the Watermelon Red at home and the Orange at Nana’s house. While the chair is meant to be used on the floor, it was also great during dinner as Hubby and I enjoyed eating our dinner and interacting with our most entertaining centerpiece on the dining room table.

The beautiful place mats were the only (very minor) disappointment. Despite being quite beautiful, they are pretty useless. The problem is that there isn’t anything to grip them to the tray! So, Bella just pulls it up and throws it to the side. Sometimes, she’ll chew it. Which is funny most times, but really quite amusing when there is food on the tray, as everything goes flying… Oh well… I wish that Prince Lionheart would attach something that would hook into the holes on the tray that hold the spinning toy. That would be easy to solve and it would be perfect.

The one concern that I have about the chair is that once your baby becomes strong and mobile, you really do need to keep an eye on your baby and always nearby. When she grows tired of being in the chair, she will strain against the confines and she has flipped the chair over while still locked in it. She was fine, just a little shaken up, but of course, not as shaken as I. We still love the chair and use it frequently, but with caution. I remove her as soon as I notice that she wants to get out. Do not leave your child unattended in this chair, but you wouldn’t do that anyway, would you?

The chair’s material is very firm and supportive, but also will give with pressure and is soft. It is extremely easy to clean. I have found that it is very easy to clean the tray in the dishwasher.
